School Enrollment
Are children allowed the ability and opportunity to recieve an education?
School enrollment measures the percentage of school-age children who are enrolled in educational institutions. It reflects how well a city ensures access to formal education for all youth.
When enrollment is low, it may indicate barriers such as cost, housing instability, immigration status, or disengagement from the system. Students without consistent school access are at higher risk for long-term social and economic challenges. Cities can support enrollment by improving outreach, transportation access, and partnerships with families and community organizations.
When enrollment is high, it suggests broad access to education and stronger support for young people's development and future success.
Primary Indicator
Percentage of children aged 5 to 14 enrolled in school
Data were obtained from the American Community Survey Subject Table S1401. To calculate the percentage of children ages 5-14 enrolled in school, we followed these steps:
- We obtained the total number of children aged 5-9 and 10-14 enrolled in school, variables S1401_C01_016E and S1401_C01_018E.
- Then, we divided it by the total number of children aged 5-9 and 10-14 from variables S1401_C01_015E and S1401_C01_017E, respectively.
